Grammy Award-winner Jim Shirey has been working as a musician, songwriter, and teacher for more than a decade.
Born and raised in northern Virginia, Jim grew up in a musical family. He first picked up a guitar in during his preteen years, and was writing songs and fronting blues and jazz bands by his mid-teens. Since receiving his Bachelor's degree from Harvard University, Jim has spent five years as a classroom teacher and three years on the road with folk and country bands from Boston and Nashville. In 2016, the O'Connor Band recorded two of his songs on their debut album Coming Home, which won Best Bluegrass Album at the 2017 Grammy Awards.
Teaching is Jim's favorite way to express his passion for music. He has taught students of all ages in all styles of guitar and piano playing, with an approach that values flexibility over flash and musicianship over memorization. He is thrilled to be working with In Home Music Teachers and looks forward to helping you achieve your goals, explore your musical intuition, and discover not just how to play, but why.
Jim currently teaches piano to students at the beginner through intermediate levels, and guitar to students of all skill levels.
