Critically praised as having "successfully helped develop a specific voice amidst a sea of talented vocalists" and "flawlessly tackling the score," Matty Mitchell (they/them) balances a multifaceted career as a traveling musical artist, touring musician, and dedicated teaching artist. They received their bachelor's degree in Music Education from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. They later earned their master's degree in Music Performance from New York University, where they further refined their artistry and pedagogical approach.

Throughout their training, Matty studied with contemporary leaders in oboe performance, Matt Sullivan, Jonathan Blumenfeld, Nathan Hughes, and Bert Lucarelli, as well as critically acclaimed jazz and classical pianists, including Leah Claiborne, James Hillis, Andy Milne, and Karina Bruk. These wide-ranging influences have shaped Matty into a versatile musician whose work bridges genres, disciplines, and communities.
Having performed with professional orchestras, pit ensembles, and chamber groups, Matty's musical background reflects both technical breadth and a deep curiosity for diverse musical traditions. Their performances have been celebrated for "aplomb playing" (Broadway World), expressive nuance, and an engaging stage presence. As an educator, Matty is known for their mindfully inclusive approach, creating learning environments that honor each student's identity, artistry, and lived experience.

Beyond their formal work, Matty is driven by a love for collaboration and a profound belief in the connective power of live performance. Whether in a rehearsal room, on a concert stage, or in a classroom, they are committed to fostering community through music-making.

Matty resides in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia, where they can most often be found sight-reading new repertoire, composing, practicing yoga, experimenting with new creative projects, and embracing life with curiosity and joy.
