Kate Young

Kate Young is a clarinetist from upstate New York who has been teaching and performing in the Philadelphia area since 2016. She teaches Clarinet and Saxophone for the St. Andrew's School in Middletown, DE, and Clarinet at the Nelly Berman School of Music in Ardmore, PA. Before moving to Philadelphia, Kate worked and taught throughout Louisiana for 7 years, serving as Professor of Clarinet and Saxophone at the Louisiana College in Pineville, LA. Dr. Young also worked as a Bass, Eb, and soprano clarinetist with the Baton Rouge Symphony, Acadiana Symphony, and Opera Lousiane company.

Dr. Young gives regular masterclasses and performances both locally and internationally (including such venues as Universidad de Panamá, the Instituto Nacional de Música de Panamá, the Casa de Cultura de Panamá, a residency of performances in Chile, University of Maryland, University of Montana, LSU, Northwestern State, Southeastern University, University of Southern Mississippi, Southern University and numerous local schools). She appeared with the Louisiana College Wind Ensemble for a performance of Scott McAlister's Black Dog and with the University of Rochester Symphony Orchestra for Carl Maria von Weber's Concertino.

Dr. Young earned her Masters of Music (2011) and Doctorate of Musical Arts degrees (2014) from Louisiana State University. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and Brain and Cognitive Science from the University of Rochester (2009). Her teachers include Robert DiLutis and Deborah Chodacki. Dr. Young has combined the French-inspired Julliard tradition and American-school Eastman tradition of her teachers and combined them into a comprehensive approach to learning the clarinet. Her extensive teaching experience at all levels has prepared her to help any new student.

Whether you are a beginner or advanced student looking for conservatory prep, Dr. Young can help you meet your goals in a fun and productive way. All clarinet instruction revolves around the development of fundamental techniques including tone development, proper breathing and support, technical fingerwork, and musical phrasing through repertoire. You'll work closely on these principles but we'll make it enjoyable - the way music should be!
